Electricity storage

This Briefing provides an introduction to electricity storage technologies and answers some key questions about the roles that storage can play within the electricity system, including the relationship between storage and other ways of increasing system flexibility, such as interconnectors and demand management.  There is increasing interest around the world in electricity storage as one of the ways to counteract the variability of renewable power sources such as wind and solar and also to provide balancing services to the grid.  While pumped storage and lead-acid batteries are mature technologies, a range of other technologies are mostly at demonstration or early commercial stage.
