About this event

Watchkeeper is the next generation Tactical Unmanned Air System that provides intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) for the UK Armed Forces. The air vehicle has a mass of around 450 kg, powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The system provides a dual payload capability with a Day Night Camera Laser sub subsystem and a Synthetic Aperture and Ground Moving Target Indicator Radar. The information is distributed and communicated to Ground Control Stations and Remote Viewing Terminal providing battlefield situation awareness. The Watchkeeper System has seen operational deployment in Afghanistan and other overseas training locations. Nick Miller will describe the Watchkeeper system,  the various technologies that it embodies, the product it outputs and an insight into the Future of Unmanned Systems.

Nick Miller graduated from Liverpool University with a B Eng honours in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and joined Racal Electronics as a Graduate Engineer. His early career was spent as an Electronics Warfare specialist, before in 1995 switching to broader management roles including Export Finance and Commercial Manager. He spent 3 years in the USA, as the Company’s Supply Chain Programme Manager, before returning to the UK and becoming ISTAR Programme Manager. Transition to the Thales Group saw the introduction into Unmanned Air Systems as Industrial Strategy Manager and Business Development Manager. As part of a government initiative for Airspace access for unmanned systems Nick was vice chairman of the ASTRAEA consortium. Nick’s currently role is responsibility for Key account of ISTAR and UAV Systems portfolio for Thales UK.
