Joint Event.

About this event

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become an embedded technology in our everyday lives, through SatNav in cars and the many location based apps on smartphones.  But, as with any new technology there are almost as many myths spreading around about GPS as there are actual facts.  Furthermore, GPS is no longer the only viable satellite navigation system, as recent years have seen the resurrection of the Russian GLONASS and the emergence of two new systems:  the European Galileo  and the Chinese BeiDou systems.  But, none of these systems penetrate deeply into buildings, and so additional technologies are being developed to allow us to benefit from continuous, ubiquitous positioning to meet our every increasing demands for location technology.  This talk will start by endeavouring to dispel some of the GPS myths and then explain the limitations, vulnerabilities and reality of satellite-based positioning.
