About this event

The DE&S Environmental and Safety Assurance Symposium (ESAS) is the UK MOD's flagship equipment safety and environmental event.  The ESAS2018 theme is “Disruptive World Challenges” – agility in Defence safety and environmental decision making.

Topics being considered for ESAS 2018 focus on the effects of disruptive technologies in a disruptive world. These include:
  • Autonomous systems
  • The future of regulation – using new technologies to promote safety
  • Safety and sustainability post Brexit
  • Digital assurance cases
  • Learning lessons from Defence accident investigation
  • Proportionality and complex systems
  • Safe and secure data systems
  • Human factors in the digital world
  • Risk reduction judgement tools and techniques
  • Contracting for safety and sustainability
  • Environmental Defence standard
  • Cyber safe & secure infrastructure
  • Safety of systems using artificial intelligence


The closing date for paper and workshop abstract submissions is 30 March 2018. Initially, we are looking for a 250 word abstract, which will be subject to review by an MOD Panel during April.

Additional information

The symposium will be held at MOD Abbey Wood, Bristol on 18 and 19 Sep 2018. It is attended by over 500 people from the MOD, industry and academia over the two days, hosting up to 350 MOD and industry delegates each day.

The event is hosted by Defence Equipment & Support in partnership with Atkins and QinetiQ, with support from the IET System Safety Engineering network.

Registration information

Attendance at the event is strictly by registration only.  Discounts are available for IET members, with an early-bird discount for bookings before 31 Mar 2018.
