Virtual Reality (VR) is a hot topic nowadays. The rate of development is quick in recent years, and fast becoming a household norm with wearables and functions that allow people to “enter” a new dimension, but also VR can be used in industry.

A low cost, high performance generic Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) – the imseCAVE - through the integration and innovative customization of state-of-the-art engineering and technologies including virtual and augmented reality, sensor network, distributed computing, big-data processing and management. It is a fully immersive and interactive visualization system that provides extremely vivid stereoscopic views of an unlimited virtual world within a small room of a few square metres. The imseCAVE has already been deployed in the simulation of very large and complex logistics systems, including the automated air cargo terminals and port container terminals. It was used to develop virtual reality-empowered training systems and programmes for ramp operations. Such simulations provide a means for management, engineers and users to study their operations without the need to physically disturb the normal operations of these facilities.
In this seminar, Dr Henry Lau will introduce (1) the technical philosophy, (2) the application, challenges and future trend and most importantly (3) the most successfully developed project (e.g. imseCAVE). 


Speaker
Dr. Henry Lau, Associate Professor, The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) of the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) specializes in intelligent automation, virtual reality, computer-based modeling and simulation. His research interest includes artificial intelligence, in particular, artificial immune systems (AIS), automated material handling, immersive virtual reality, system analysis and design. 
In addition, Henry is also interested in the design and evaluation of automated material handling systems such as automated warehouses using computer simulation, VR solutions including the imseCAVE that is successfully developed with researchers to create a truly immersive virtual environment.
Over the past decade, the researcher team led by Dr. Henry Lau has created the innovations for interactive visualization and simulations of complex systems and operations.
