To learn the application of X-Rays principle, telecommunication, and digital electronics leading to creation of Linear Accelerators and how it can be deployed to treat cancer and control illegal activities in Hong Kong.

Date and Time

23 March 2018 - 18:30-20:30

Organised by the E & S.E Asia:Hong Kong local network.

About this event

Linear accelerator is the result of technology fusion involving the combination and conversion of a number of different core technologies into medical applications, i.e. radiation therapy and security scanning i.e. cargo inspection.

In this seminar, participants will acquire fundamental knowledge of Linear Accelerators, X-Rays theory, and radiation safety.

Contents of this seminar will focus on following three major issues :
1. From the transformation of high voltage power supply to X-rays generation, what are the physics and technologies involved in the design of Linear Accelerators?
2. From the transformation of design to practical implementation, how are the Linear Accelerators be operated for radiotherapy treatment of patients and for X-rays scanning of cargo
3. From the phase of installation to daily maintenance of medical linear accelerators, what are the responsibilities of the Biomedical Engineer to ensure the quality of radiotherapy treatment in terms of precision treatment, radiation safety, and equipment safety

About the speaker
Ir.  Ricky Chan, CEng, MIET, has been taking up the rank of Physicist in various government hospitals for over 35 years since graduating from BSc (Honours) in Biomedical Electronics, United Kingdom. He is the front-line biomedical engineer to maintain medical linear accelerators and various X-rays equipment as well as the technical support leader for the procurement, installation, radiation protection and acceptance testing of X-rays equipment. Mr. Chan has been the chairperson and the examiner of engineering physics sub-group of Hong Kong Association of Medical Physics (HKAMP) since 2005. He has been helping HKAMP to train resident physicists and is currently a mentor of IET.

Ir. Chan specializes in radiation protection and safety in the fields of using ionizing radiations and non-ionizing radiations including laser radiation, optical radiation and RF radiation. Because of his radiation expertise, he has been invited to provide radiation safety training for Occupational Safety & Health Council and laser safety training for private hospitals, Hong Kong Police Force, School of Continuing and Professional Studies CUSCS.
