The speakers will talk about benefits of volunteering at the IET and being a Chartered Engineer.

Speakers' bio

Mike Henry is a Project Engineering Manager for Wood in Singapore, concentrating in the oil and gas engineering sector.  He has lived and worked in Singapore since 2009, but spent 2 years overseas working on assignment in Vietnam and has recently returned to Singapore.  Prior to 2009, Mike worked in the UK for Wood (legacy Foster Wheeler) in Reading, but spent various periods of time overseas on assignments in various locations.  He joined the IET as a student in 1997, while studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.  He holds a BEng (Hons.) degree, is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) through the IET and a Chartered Manager (CMgr) with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).  Mike is an active IET member and has previously held the positions of Honorary Secretary and Young Professionals Section (YPS) Chairman for the IET Singapore Network.  He has also volunteered to become an IET Singapore Committee member during the 2017-2019 terms.  He will be focused on Market Outreach in Singapore, with the intention to further raise the profile of the IET in Singapore, while also acting as YPS Council.

Dr Andrew Ng is an Assistant Professor with Singapore Institute of Technology. He is the Deputy Programme Director of the BEng (Honours) and MEngTech in Sustainable Infrastructure Engineering (Land), which focuses on railway engineering and total preventive maintenance. Dr Ng is a Chartered Engineer (Engineering Council, UK), Member of the IET, IES, and Senior Member of the IEEE. He is a Principal Investigator of several research grants amounting to over S$0.5 million. He holds one international patent and has more than 20 publications as both first and corresponding author. His research and development innovations have also bagged him several awards such as Young Investigator Award and National Instrument Editor’s Choice Engineering Impact Award.
A Chartered Engineer (CEng) is an engineer who has achieved a high level of competency and commitment to professionalism in their particular branch of engineering. In today’s society, being a CEng is a common requirement to be considered for senior positions in the company. This presentation will highlight the benefits of being a CEng and describe the application process for a CEng with the Engineering Council and IET in UK.

Dr VK Liau is currently the Associate Dean (International) and Head of School of Engineering and Technology of PSB Academy Singapore. He provides leadership, strategic and operational management in relation to international activity as part of the institution’s strategy for growth, and has experience in developing international academic partnerships. Dr Liau graduated with a first class B.Eng (Hons), and PhD degree from University of Liverpool. He has academic and industrial work experience in different countries, including the UK, China, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. Dr Liau is extremely passionate in engaging young students to become IET Volunteers. He was the founding Faculty Advisors for PSB OC (Singapore) and Chindwin OC (Myanmar). He was runner-up of IET Volunteering Medal 2017, and has successfully guided PSB OC in winning the first IET On Campus Group of the Year in 2017. Prior to that, he has served two years as committee member of IET Malaysia LN. He joined the IET since 1999.
PSB Academy OC was set up formally on 26th November 2016, as the second IET On-Campus initiative in Singapore after NTU OC. In 2017, they group won the IET On Campus Group of the Year Award. The presentation will focus on the journey the student committee have went through, and highlights some of the influence and impacts they produced.
