About this event

Next Generation Train Positioning System
Thales UK
The next generation of train positioning systems will remove the need for trackside infrastructure to train-centric solutions that will use sensors such as cameras, radars, GPS (when available) and LIDARS along with new algorithms and processors to provide a train with the ability to sense obstacles and determine its speed and location without the need for trackside balises. New platforms will use similar technology to that deployed in autonomous vehicles for both positioning and obstacle detection.
The goal is to improve the operational capability of both driver and driverless systems and at the same time to reduce the quantity of equipment required on the track for a rail system.
The rail domain uses different standards than the automobile industry and any new solution must be safe and have the same or better reliability than the current generation of positioning technology (based on speed sensors, wayside balises and single axis accelerometers). Crucially, the existing positioning systems are SIL4, and the next generation must achieve the same level of safety integrity.
This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at 19.00, lecture at 19:30.

Programme

Lecture starts at 19:30, but tea/coffee and biscuits will be available from 19:00
