About this event

Cancer is the main cause of death between the ages of 45-65 years. In its treatment Radio Therapy (RT) plays an essential role, RT with charged particles, such as protons and light ions offers advantages over photons for specific cancers. They penetrate the patient with minimal diffusion, deposit maximum energy at the end of their range, and can be shaped as narrow focused and scanned pencil beams of variable penetration depth.
Significant progress has been made in the use of particle beams for cancer treatment but an extensive R & D programme is needed to maximise benefits from these therapies.
