About this event

The Lecture

Traffic Lights Shouldn’t Make You See Red!

The development of cities throughout history have resulted in an influx of people and with them a variety of modes of transport from foot and horseback through to mechanical vehicles. Wherever the influx of people has occurred, congestion has followed and a means of clearing that congestion been required.

From the earliest gas powered traffic lights in London, through to the development of modern computer-controlled, traffic controllers, the technology has grown as has the adoption of traffic signals around the world. It can be argued that traffic lights are one of the earliest examples of technology to create Smarter Cities making travel safer and more efficient for road users.

The Speaker – Joe Connolly has been a member of the IET for over 25 years, working on a variety of projects from the large hadron collider at CERN regarding electron volts through to high voltage engineering with ABB. He emigrated to New Zealand in 2009 and is currently the contract manager for the Dunedin Traffic Signals Maintenance Contract, recently awarded the Civil Contractors New Zealand Best Asset Maintenance Contract nationally in 2017.
