Maritime Autonomy for the Royal Navy

Lecture

The RN is adopting novel technologies as early as possible. E.g. the integration of autonomous vehicles into the RN’s “Order of Battle”. The long term vision is for the RN to be able to address the future threats with significantly reduced manning.

About this event

A brief Isle of Wight Section annual review will precede this lecture.

The increasing capability and reducing costs of modern threats are causing the RN to accelerate the adoption of novel technologies as early as possible.  One such technology is Autonomy – specifically the integration of autonomous air, surface and subsurface vehicles into the RN’s “Order of Battle”.  The long term vision is for the RN to be able to address the future threats with at minimum the current manpower requirements but ideally with significantly reduced manning. The talk will present some of the challenges in planning out the adoption of a relatively immature technology such as autonomy as well as how we go about proving the operational, safety and security aspects of such new technologies in realistic environments.
