About this event

This event comprises a technical talk followed by an optional dinner. Please note that the talk and dinner have separate registration pages: you can register for either or both.

The Talk

Crossrail is a £14.8bn programme for the new Elizabeth line through central London. 42km of tunnels and 10 new stations have been built, along with upgrades to existing lines and stations to provide a new railway for London. 

Simon Bennett is the Head of Learning Legacy at Crossrail: a Civil Engineer, Transport Planner and Communications professional, Simon worked on the original 1990s Crossrail scheme for London Underground and in 2000 was seconded from TfL to Cross London Rail Links to work on developing the project and securing powers.

Simon will explain the Crossrail progress so far and the current work to install all the railway systems before testing begins.

Timings for the talk are: 18:00 refreshments, 18:30 start, 19:45 finish. The talk is followed by a cash bar until 20:30 and then an optional dinner (booked separately) from 20:30 to 22:30.

Following the talk, a cash bar will be available from 19:45 until dinner begins at 20:30 (22:30 expected finish). There is a choice of two starters, two mains and two desserts as follows:

The Dinner


1. Ham hock terrine and toasted brioche
2. Roasted tomato and basil soup with warm bread (V)


3. Roast fillet of salmon, crushed new potatoes, lemon and chive butter, seasonal vegetables
4. Rosemary pork belly, leek mashed potatoes, caramelised apple cider sauce, seasonal vegetables


5. Chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream
6. Strawberries and cream filled meringue 

A vegetarian option is available on request.

Please register here for the dinner (at £29.50 per person) and include your menu choices in your registration (1 or 2, 3 or 4, and 5 or 6, or vegetarian). Menu choices are required by 7th September.

Payment of £29.50 per person must be made in advance of the dinner either by cheque payable to "Friends of the IET Solent Network" and posted to Neil Turner, BAE Systems, Building 31, Broad Oak Works, Portsmouth PO3 5PQ, or by bank/online transfer (account details are available on request by clicking here).
