Swindon - Cyber Security Lessons from the Pay TV Industry

Image of three blue heads in profile on grey background

Despite knowing that security is essential, the pay TV industry has made significant mistakes which we can learn from as we move into a world of IoT devices.

Date and Time

14 November 2017 - 18:30-20:30

Swindon, United Kingdom - icon_popup  (See map)

Organised by the UK - SW:Swindon local network.

About this event

The cryptographic techniques and systems used to protect pay TV content will be introduced to set the scene for understanding the widespread piracy that has afflicted the industry.  A number of successful pay TV piracy attacks from the late 1980s to the present day will be described, as well as how they were eventually countered, or not.  There will then be a look at how the lessons learned can be applied to the development and use of mass-market, low-cost IoT devices.

Graham Turner CEng FIET, Chairman IET Multimedia Communications Technical and Professional Network

Graham Turner has worked in the pay and digital television industry since the late 1980s.  He has been involved in carrying out security audits on many of the conditional access systems used to protect content, as well as helping broadcasters fight the piracy of their systems subsequent to deployment.
