About this event

In 2017 the worldwide Oil and Gas industry spent £400 billion on capital expenditure and employed 350,000 people in the UK.  Oil and Gas remains an important industry for the UK and is heavily reliant on instrumentation systems to ensure the industry operates safely and efficiently.

Dr. Wes Maru, R&D Manager of OGM Ltd., based in Ely, will talk about measurement systems and instrumentation in the oil and gas industry and in particular on the flow measurement instrumentations that are installed, including those widely employed in Custody Transfer Applications.  Ultrasonic and Turbine Flow metering devices as well as Mixing and Sampling Systems that are characterised via Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Electrical Capacity Tomography (ECT), will be presented as well as techniques for how flows are predicted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

The devices deployed for Custody Transfer Applications are usually referred to as the "Cash Register" of the industry as they are used to enable transactions between oil buyers and sellers.  They are also used to set government taxation and are required to achieve the highest possible accuracy, repeatability and reliability, which is a never ending operational and technological challenge  For the public these devices not only determine energy bills but also the weekly cost of shopping.

Dr. Wes Maru is a recognised expert in multi-phase flow tomography and modelling and was awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Award in 2016.  he has published papers and presented at conferences on measurement systems in Oil and Gas.
