About this event

Zenbo, Buddy, Jibo and other social robots are served as family companions, smart home managers and security devices. Willow Garage PR2 is built for research in computer vision and motion algorithms. A social robot running ROS with Lidar for SLAM will be introduced in this talk.

Steven W.K. Kwan received his B.Eng.(Hons.) and M.Sc. degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (formerly called Hong Kong Polytechnic) in 1992 and 1996, respectively. During 1992–1994, he worked in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a Research Assistant under the Department of Electronic Engineering. He completed the hardware platform of a Shared Bus Multi-processor System. 

Then, he worked in Valence Semiconductors HK Limited as an Integrated Circuit Design Engineer. Chips including ASIC and 8-bit MCUs were designed. By 1996-2002, he served Motorola Semiconductor Product Sector (HK/China/India/USA) designing chips and leading teams. His front-end and back-end IC design jobs covered chips such as various generations of DragonBall, ATM network fabric, 2.5G mobile phone baseband processor. 

Since late 2002, he returned HK and started to provide electronic and automation engineering design consultancy services. He was part-time lecturer in Vocational Training Council for IC engineering and Electronic Design Automation during 2003-2008. He is currently a Part-time Research Associate in the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, working on image processing hardware and robotics. 
He is an active volunteer in STEM education since 2007. Right now, he is developing technical teams to build embedded systems and autonomous machines.
