About this event

Fusion is the combination of light nuclei to produce heavier ones, releasing vast amounts of energy. In nature, fusion occurs in the centre of stars but is it feasible to harness on earth? Stevie will explain the principles behind magnetic confinement fusion; the current state of fusion research and what the next steps are to develop commercial fusion power. As a special addition to the regular content, there will be an additional section on the power supplies used on the Joint European Torus (JET) from a design and operational point of view.

About the Speaker

Our speaker, Steven Wray MEng MIET, is an electrical/electronics engineer working at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE). His main role is to maintain, operate and upgrade the power supplies used for powering the Joint European Torus (JET) experiment as part of a team. On the outreach side of things Stevie, also known as a former winner of the ‘I'm an Engineer, Get me out of here' online competition, is an active ambassador of fusion research; taking time to explain engineering to students and inspire them to consider it as a career.
