About this event

Speaker:

Dr Elizabeth Bruton, Heritage Officer, Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, University of Manchester Marconi had been invited by the newspapers to report upon the popular event and they hired Marconi a steamboat which he could use to monitor the yachting races and hence send Morse code using a wireless telegraphy system of his own making back to a wireless station at Dun Laoghaire harbour and hence by telephone to the newspapers’ headquarters in Dublin. Marconi sent hundreds of wireless messages during the two-day event and the newspaper were able to report the result of each race ahead of their newspaper rivals. The event was a great success for both parties, particularly in terms of the excitement and publicity surrounding the event.
