About this event

Electrification of the railways in Wales, in particular the Great Western Main Line to Swansea, will bring lightweight, quiet, energy-efficient trains, with higher acceleration to improve overall performance. Great Western Electrification is a high profile project, but away from the public discussions the project contains some leading work on modern traction power system design.

This lecture will focus on the technical challenges of modern traction power systems, and explain the new techniques and innovative engineering applied to the power system design for Great Western Electrification. It will discuss modelling and design techniques, integrated system design, modern traction earthing analysis, signalling and telecommunications compatibility and grid connection design. It will also look at the application of Smart Grid technology, and the first dedicated application of IEC 61850 substation communication systems to traction systems.

The lecture will be given by Dr Dave Hewings, who has over twenty years experience of traction power systems and has led the developments in power system technology for Great Western Electrification. Dave originates from Wales, and undertook a PhD in probabilistic traction power system design at University of Wales Swansea before joining British Rail. He has led the national Network Rail strategy for traction system design for several years, and is also active in the development of British and European Standards related to electrification and traction power systems.
