About this event

People have been talking about “sustainable development” for some four decades.  But Man now faces a wide variety of problems which could easily exterminate Man within a century or so.  The talk will examine how Industrial Revolution, globalization, urbanization, consumerism, etc. have made our extinction a possibility.  It will also discuss what we might do to steer Man towards a more sustainable form of existence on Earth.

 

Biography of Speaker
Mr Lam Chiu Ying served as the Director of the Hong Kong Observatory between 2003 and 2009.  He is currently Adjunct Professor of Department of Geography and Resource Management Department, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chairman of Hong Kong Countryside Foundation, Chairman of the HKSAR Environmental Campaign Committee and Associate Member of HKSAR Government Central Policy Unit.  He also serves as committee members or advisors of various organizations including the Hong Kong Scout Association and the Hong Kong Red Cross.

Mr Lam is a meteorologist by profession.  His main hobby is bird-watching.  His various honours include: Honorary Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, Honorary University Fellow of the University of Hong Kong, and Honorary President of the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society.

After retirement, Mr Lam frequently gives talks on diverse subjects such as leadership, nature and life philosophy.  He advocates that a simple life in harmony with Nature is a good life.  His publications include: The Birds of Hong Kong and South China (co-author), Thoughts on Wings (in Chinese, with Mrs Lam) and Cosmos in Flux, Place for Peace (in Chinese).
