About this event

MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language, which allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other languages, including C, C++, Java, and Fortran.
Given that almost all Engineering and Computer Science departments and the vast majority of high-tech firms are now buying Matlab it is interesting to question why there has been near universal adoption of the most expensive option. In this talk we will explain how Matlab works, what the alternatives are, and attempt to show when the free software might be usable.
