About this event

Set to be the tallest building in Western Europe at 306m tall, the Shard is designed by structural engineers WSP and architect Renzo Piano.  The mixed-use building – a “vertical city” – comprises 28 stories of offices, 12 floors of apartments, 6 levels of restaurants and an 18 storey hotel.  At the top is a 60m tall steel and glass spire, containing a public viewing gallery offering 360° views of London.  The Shard will be a sharp and light presence on the London skyline, welcoming more than 8000 workers, residents and hotel guests a day, and more than 2 million public visitors a year.

Speaker

Richard Mawer BEng PhD

Richard is an Associate Director at WSP, joining them in 2005 after he completed a PhD in Structural Engineering at Southampton University.  He has been involved with a variety of tall buildings joining the Shard design team in 2006.  His main involvement in the project was the design of the core stability system of the Shard.
