About this event

This afternoon and evening seminar focuses on engineering innovation in the distribution network, through the sessions ‘Smart Grids: The challenges and opportunities of electric vehicles’ and ‘Smart Grids in the distribution network’. Separate registrations are required for each session. Details are given below on each of the sessions.

• Afternoon Session - Smart Grids: The challenges and opportunities of electric vehicles

This IET Manchester PTG Smart Grids event discusses both the challenges and opportunities that electric vehicles present, including trials on smart charge control strategies and vehicle to grid.

  • The My Electric Avenue project will be presented, which aims to simulate a 2030 electricity network so that the network challenges caused by an increased uptake of electric vehicles can be assessed. Charge control strategies to reduce the network stresses will be trialled.
  • Future Transport Systems will discuss trials focusing on electric vehicles as a smart grid solution, including integrating vehicles with energy storage and grid support / power management and fleet vehicle to grid trials.
  • An update on the Manchester Electric Car Company project will be presented which involved the installation of public charging points in Manchester. Findings and learning points from this project will be discussed.

• Evening Session - Smart Grids in the Distribution Network

Smart Grids in the Distribution Network evening seminar aims to highlight Smart Grid technology and projects to inspire further engineering innovation in the Distribution Network.
