Solent Network Forum: The value of the local network to business

Image of three blue heads in profile on grey background

This Forum will address the relationship between the local network and local engineering businesses. What needs to be done beyond the current pogramme to ensure that these local businesses perceive value in their relationship with the IET locally?

Date and Time

30 January 2014 - 18:30-20:45

Southampton, United Kingdom - icon_popup  (See map)

Organised by the Solent local network.

About this event

Earlier in 2013, the Solent local network of the IET considered how it might enhance the value it provides to academic partners in the region and to individual members of the IET (or those that simply want to be part of the local network – for which IET membership is not a pre-requisite).  In this third forum in the series, we will do likewise in respect of local Engineering and Technology businesses.  If you are connected with such businesses in the Solent Area, we are keen to hear your views.

At present, the local network facilitates a number of activities for individuals, in line with the IET’s commitment to provide a professional home for life for Engineers and Technicians.  These include mentoring and professional registration workshops, life-skills events and a rich variety of talks that prove popular across the profession, from undergraduates and junior technicians to retired chartered engineers and Institution Fellows.  There is bound to be an inherited value for the businesses and other organisations that employ these people, but can the local network do anything that delivers enhanced value more directly for the local engineering and technology business community?

When Edison first invented the electric light bulb, he had a delightfully simple concept; to "burn" electricity just like the gas lamp before it had burnt hydrocarbons - to produce heat and almost incidentally light.
