This is a presentation about traffic measurement in modern telecommunication networks. In this talk Matt demonstrates the importance of mathematical modelling in the design of such telecommunication systems. These mathematical techniques were pioneered by the Danish telephone engineer A. K. Erlang and those known as Erlang B and Erlang C  are examples of equations (loss Formulae) used to help plan traffic from small villages  and call centres to voting by phone on large syndicated television programmes such as X Factor and Britain's Got Talent.
