About this event

John Polak is Professor of Transport Demand, Chairman of the Centre for Transport Studies and Director of Research in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. He is a mathematician by background with over 30 years experience in transport research and teaching, specializing in the areas of mathematical and statistical transport modeling and analysis. Much of his recent research has been concerned with the collection, analysis and interpretation of very large scale real-time datasets related to operational, behavioral, attitudinal and environmental aspects of transport.

In recent years considerable attention has been paid to the potential of so called smart technologies to improve the efficiency of city systems and the quality of life of urban populations. However, the adoption of these approaches has been less rapid than many in the ICT community hoped, and practical demonstration of benefits is still limited. This presentation will consider some of the opportunities and challenges of smart cities and will consider what lessons can be drawn for smart cities from the experience of the successful development intelligent transport systems over the past decades.
