About this event

A short informal talk to introduce the topic of why, if alien civilizations exist, we have not detected or established contact with them. This will be followed by questions, answers and general discussion. The evening is designed to appeal to anyone with an interest in science and takes place in surroundings where anyone can feel comfortable asking a question.

About the speaker

Prof Andy Augousti is Professor of Applied Physics and Instrumentation at Kingston University, where he has lectured on a wide range of subjects including Introductory Astronomy, and Stellar Structure and Evolution. Many years ago he ground, figured, polished and aluminised his own f8 8" (20cm) mirror, but never quite completed building the telescope to house it. A former shortlisted candidate to be the first British astronaut, as part of the Soviet Juno mission in 1991, he maintains an interest in matters astronomical. He has published over 100 refereed journal and conference publications, several books of edited conference proceedings and patents. He holds an MBA, and is a Fellow of the IET, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Measurement and Control. He is a recipient of the President's Award of Tianjin University, China and the Honeywell International Medal of the Institute of Measurement and Control.
