About this event

Surgical techniques have been evolving over times. As the complexities of surgical techniques have increased so has the trend to undertake surgery which causes minimal morbidity. Laparoscopy (keyhole) surgery had been step in the right direction.

In the last twelve years robotic surgery has evolved initially in USA and subsequently in Europe. Currently only one company Intuitive Surgical makes a medical Robot 'Da Vinci. It has been widely used in treating prostate cancer. However newer indications
for its use in other surgical specialities are being evaluated. Freeman Hospital is the first Institution in the North East to have acquired Da Vinci.

The talk would focus on current indications for robotic surgery and future applications

Speaker: Mr. Naeem Soomro
Mr. Soomro Graduated from King Edward Medical College Pakistan in 1982. He undertook basic surgical and specialist urological training in the United Kingdom. He was appointed Consultant Urologist at Freeman hospital in 1998. He is also honorary senior lecturer in Newcastle University. He has developed minimal invasive urological service in the North East and is currently developing Robotic surgery in Freeman hospital. He is Director of Robotic surgery and also Clinical Director of Urology / Nephrology directorate. Mr Soomro is an Examiner for FRCS Urology and member of Intercollegiate Board in Urology.

This talk was previously scheduled for 21 Jan 2013, but was postponed due to bad weather.
