About this event

The millimetre-wave and terahertz regions of the electromagnetic spectrum have recently attracted new interest with new applications beginning to appear such as communications, non-destructive testing and medical imaging.

The availability of higher power solid state sources, more efficient multipliers and room temperature detectors is pushing the boundary of solid state systems to 1 THz, opening up a raft of commercially driven industrial applications. The emergence of 5G communications and E-band radios is providing a cost-effective entry into the lower millimetre wave part of the spectrum.

Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) operating at ever higher temperatures are becoming a practical alternative to gas lasers for the multi-terahertz region.

New machining and fabrication techniques such as 3D printing coupled with powerful finite element analysis and testing capability offers further reductions in cost and more complicated system architectures.

This colloquium will provide the latest insight from leaders in their fields as to the direction the technology and commercial outlook is likely to take.

Meet the speakers

Dr Samiur Rahman, University of St Andrews
Samiur Rahman obtained his PhD degree from the University College London (UCL), UK. During his PhD, he was involved with the Antarctic Ice Shelf study at UHF band FMCW Radar project, which was a joint collaboration between the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and UCL. He developed various signal processing algorithms to profile and image Antarctic Ice Shelf basal layers. He worked with Phased Array Imaging, MIMO Imaging and SAR Imaging during this period. He has joined the University of St Andrews in August 2016 as a PDRA to work on a project to detect small UAVs by using mm-wave radar.

Dr Duncan A. Robertson, University of St Andrews
Duncan A. Robertson holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics and Electronics and a Ph.D. in millimetre wave physics from the University of St Andrews, Scotland. For most of the past 20 years he has been with the Millimetre Wave Group at the University of St Andrews working on battlefield systems, passive imaging, electron spin resonance spectroscopy instrumentation, and millimetre wave radar for terrain mapping and security and surveillance. His research interests include millimetre-wave radar, radiometry, imaging, electron spin resonance instrumentation, quasi-optics, materials characterization (ferrites, dielectrics, and absorbers) and antennas.

Claudio Paoloni , Lancaster University, UK
Claudio Paoloni received the degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Rome “Sapienza”, Rome, Italy, in 1984. Since 2012, he has been a Professor of Electronics with the Department of Engineering, Lancaster University, Lancaster, U.K. Since 2015, he has been the Head of Engineering Department. He is author of more that 200 publications. He is coordinator of the Horizon 2020 projects, TWEETHER and ULTRAWAVE for millimetre waves high capacity wireless networks. His research fields are millimetre wave vacuum electronics devices and applications. He is IEEE Senior Member. He is Chair of the IEEE Electron Device Society Vacuum Electronics Technical Committee.

James Churm, University of Birmingham, UK
James graduated in 2013 with MEng(Hons) in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the University of Birmingham, where he specialised in on-body adaptive antenna design. He went on to study for a Ph.D. in Microfabrication for Bioengineering focusing on optimising fabrication processes for neural interfaces.
In 2017 James became a research fellow in the Metamaterials Engineering Laboratory at the University of Birmingham, under the direction of Dr Alexandros Feresidis, where he is developing new metamaterial systems and fabrication processes for future millimetre wave and terahertz applications.

Dr Graham Smith, University of St Andrews
Dr Graham Smith is a Reader in Physics at St Andrews University and heads the MM-Wave and EPR Group.
He is a former manager/director of the EPSRC National High field EPR facility. He is a past Director of the St Andrews magnetic resonance centre, past Chair of the Royal Society of Chemistry EPR Group, past Chair of the European Federation of EPR Groups, past deputy Chair of the EU COST Action on “Advanced EPR Techniques in Molecular Biophysics”
He was also PI on the Basic Technology Grant “Bringing the NMR Paradigm to EPR” which increased the sensitivity of mm-wave EPR instrumentation by over an order of magnitude.

Rui Zhang, Queen Mary University of London
Rui Zhang received her Bachelor Degree in Electronic Information Engineering in 2011 from Northwestern Polytechnical University, China. She commenced her Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering with the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London from 2015 funded by CSC (China Scholarship Council). Her research mainly focuses on Nano-communication, body-centric communication and THz characterisation of skin.

Dr Miguel Navarro-Cía, University of Birmingham, UK
Miguel Navarro-Cía SMIEEE, SMOSA, MInstP, received the MSci (2006) and PhD degrees (2010) in Telecommunication Engineering, and MRes degree in Introduction to Research in Communications (2007) from the Universidad Pública de Navarra, Spain.
He is a Birmingham Fellow at University of Birmingham. He is also affiliated with Imperial College London and University College London as a Visiting Researcher. He is the coauthor of 2 chapter books (e.g., ‘Principles of THz generation’, Wiley-IEEE Press), 90+ journal papers, and 250+ conference papers. He is an editorial board member for IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation.
Research interests: THz spectroscopy and microscopy, antennas, plasmonics, and metamaterials.
