About this event

A new sub-mm wave (200-600GHz) aviation security scanner system has been designed and fabricated, as part of an EU funded project, for the detection of objects concealed on people.

The presentation will describe the top level system design which brings together both passive and active sensors and discuss the trade-offs required to deliver the necessary performance. The passive system operates in two bands and is based on a cryogen free cooled focal plane array sensor with 9000 elements whilst the active system is a solid-state 340GHz radar with 16 transceivers. A modified version of OpenFx was used for modelling the passive system which used characters with cinematography quality. The simulated performance will be compared to results from the real system. The presentation will also highlight how developments in solid state devices have made it possible to realise real-time sub millimetre wave (200-600GHz) imagers that can form the basis of future walk through aviation security systems.

The strengths and weaknesses of working in an FP7 consortium such as CONSORTIS will also be reviewed.

Note the event is in the Tom Elliott Centre on the QinetiQ site.  You will need to register your attendance by 12:00 Mon 16 Oct on the IET events website to gain access. You should approach the site from St Andrews Road and allow  15 minutes to park, book into security and walk to the centre.
