Identifying and presenting road condition information in a vehicular environment can be a daunting process, which, if handled improperly, can place great strain on the driver’s satiated attention. Various technological advances have been employed in the past with the view of improving this process by prioritising information and presenting it in a meaningful manner. Such a task becomes more difficult under adverse weather conditions where human spatial awareness is reduced significantly, increasing the probability of collision.

Recent developments in vehicular manufacturing have rendered Head-Up Display (HUD) interfaces as an increasingly viable alternative to traditional Head-Down Displays (HDDs). HUDs appear as an alternative method for the depiction of information using symbolic or alphanumeric representation and feature a larger viewing area, i.e. a part of the windscreen, than traditional dashboard instrumentation. Notably, HUDs present a particularly suitable medium to facilitate infotainment features as they, in contrast to HDDs, may situate visual cues in close proximity to the driver’s road-seeking gaze.

Dr. Charissis will present a custom, medium fidelity simulator with full 3D stereoscopic projection, surround audio and minimum motion simulation. The custom simulator makes use of vehicle communication results derived from the well-established NS-3 simulator in order to accurately reflect realistic timings in data transfers for display cues that require cooperative communications functionality. The simulator can optionally make use of vehicular traffic information provided by a dedicated traffic simulator, which in turn is provided with real-traffic traces from a traffic information system (when available from municipality authorities).

The seminar will also include a break out session with demonstrations and hands-on of various pieces of equipment.


Dr. Vassilis Charissis’ academic background includes a BSc (Hons) in Technology of Graphics Arts and Mechanical Engineering, an MPhil in Advanced 2D/3D Motion Graphics and Virtual Prototyping and a PhD in Human Machine Interfaces and Head-Up - Display systems, the latter two from the University of Glasgow. He holds patents in automotive design and engineering, regarding novel biomimetic mechanical design for off-road vehicles and he is the recipient of two international first places for prototype design and engineering in the automotive industry competitions for FIAT and Opel respectively.
