On 12 April 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space and the first person to orbit the Earth. Gagarin's flight in Vostok 1 lasted 108 minutes, this including 89 minutes in space. He completed one orbit of the Earth, travelling at 27,400 kilometres per hour. This year will be the 50th anniversary of this momentous event.
This evening lecture will appeal to all ages and in celebrating 50 years of manned space flight will look at the past, present and future plans and possibilities.
