NATS provides air traffic control services to aircraft flying in UK airspace, and over the eastern part of the North Atlantic. In 2009 NATS handled some 2.2 million flights carrying around 200 million passengers. NATS is the sole provider of “en route” services in the UK. It operates from two centres, at Swanwick in Hampshire and Prestwick in Ayrshire.
NATS air traffic controllers track the progress of the pilots they talk to using the latest in radar and software technology and although aircraft fly to pre-determined schedules, they don’t fly exactly the same way each day and controllers need to be highly skilled to deal quickly with changing flight plans and unexpected events such as the weather, unscheduled traffic and emergency situations.
The guiding principle of air traffic control is that safety is paramount. Controllers must therefore keep the aircraft they handle safely separated using internationally agreed standards.
Working with NATS the Institution for Engineering and Technology is pleased to present this exclusive technical visit to their Hampshire facility on Thursday 28 October where attendees will learn about air traffic operations followed by a tour of the Centre to include System Control and the equipment rooms.
This exciting yet informative event will be free to attend and open to members of the IET. It is ideally suited to those interested in aerospace, control and automation and radar technologies.
This is a free to attend activity.
Registration is fully booked, however you can register for the waiting list.
