    About this event

    Background

The 6th IET International Seminar on Appropriate Healthcare Technologies for Developing Countries (AHT 2010) was held in collaboration with WHO Patient Safety and IPEM.

Research carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that almost 95% of medics practicing in less developed countries are reliant on medical technology that has been imported.  More than half of this technology however, is not utilised as staff have insufficient means to maintain the equipment or insufficient knowledge to operate it. Subsequently, there is inadequate provision for administering healthcare in the developing world.

The 6th IET International Seminar delivered at IET London provided delegates with a great opportunity to learn about the key issues surrounding healthcare provision in the developing world.

Sir Liam Donaldson, Chair of WHO Patient Safety, delivered a fascinating a keynote address. With some interesting and prominent examples, Sir Liam drew on his knowledge and experience to address the question “Does ‘Appropriate’ Compromise Patient Safety?”

    Format

Sir Liam Donaldson, Chair WHO Patient Safety launched the evening seminar with his keynote address followed by presentations from successful paper authors Caroline Gamache, Duke University, USA and Niranjan Khambete, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, India.

There was a poster exhibition to convey other research work ranging from "device technology" to "appropriate equipment donations".  You can join the electronic discussion forum INFRATECH.to comment.   Sir Liam Donaldson's interview is now able to view on IET.tv.

You will also find reports and presentations from the previous Appropriate Healthcare Technologies for Developing Countries (AHT)  seminars from our AHT resource page.
