About the event
Following the release of the BBC iPlayer, UK viewers are able to download and stream television programmes on demand. Previously, such content could only be viewed as a traditionally broadcast programme or, for some at least, as illegal downloads.
Anthony Rose will be giving a talk on his involvement with the BBC iPlayer project including his motivation for joining the BBC, the challenges that have been overcome and the problems that lie ahead for the next generation of the BBC iPlayer.
In addition to Anthony’s talk, the event serves as an informal networking evening, so why not come along and meet your fellow professionals over a glass of wine and canapés?.
About the speaker Anthony Rose
Anthony Rose was appointed Head of Digital Media Technology at the BBC in September 2007 where he became responsible for delivering the next generation of BBC iPlayer. Previously, Anthony was Chief Technology Officer at Kazaa/Altnet. During his six years with the organisation, his work included P2P networks, DRM-based content publishing and social networking services.
History of the Young Professionals event
Originally the “IEE Silvanus P. Thompson Lecture” was in fact two lectures run concurrently, one beginning each year and running for a two-year period. Following a re-brand in 2005, the Young Professionals Event changed format to a single annual event. The change of name reflects the intended target audience of both engineers and technologists, and implies an informal networking opportunity for those who attend.
In 2008 the Young Professionals Event became part of the IET’s long running annual Prestige Lecture series which includes the Kelvin Lecture, the first of which was given by Silvanus P Thompson.
