Demographic analyses have shown the serious imbalance in age distributions that will affect most Western societies in the next 20 years.

The House of Lords, DTI Globalwatch and Foresight have all published reports on this in the past 4 years, and recent government concerns about pensions continue to reflect these broader issues. Health care and assistance in domestic scenarios is a pressing problem and there is a clear need to explore technological options for direct assistance and potentially mitigating human support.

The aim of the seminar is to review the most important problem areas in health-care in domestic settings as understood by experts in the field. The technology community needs to ensure the hidden elements and needs – for example human interaction – are not ignored, and that technology provides genuine solutions to the problems.

The seminar will bring together bring both technologists with health care professionals to examine the most pressing issues. There will be an emphasis on trying to identify where technological input is appropriate and potentially beneficial by creating a platform that can help both groups understand the issues better.
