IET Faraday Engineers
Visit selected schools and assist students in developing responses to IET Faraday challenges.
Role
Faraday Engineers visit selected schools to assist students in developing responses to challenges set in the documentary films which are an element of the Faraday programme.
Input from practising engineers enables the students to produce high quality, innovative approaches to the challenges which can range from solving practical problems to considering wider ethical issues.
Research has indicated that engineers visiting schools are significant influencers, especially in view of the way science subjects are being taught, with the emphasis on the practice of science and technology. Faraday Engineers play a vital role in demonstrating to young people the skills engineers use in their work and in raising awareness of the wide range of careers the profession offers. They are pivotal in improving the perception of engineering to a wide audience.
Benefits for particpants and their employers
Participants in the scheme will gain valuable professional development skills and training, including improved mentoring, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, together with appropriate media training. These skills may recorded in Section D (Demonstrate Effective Interpersonal Skills) of the competencies required to achieve CEng and IEng registration.
In addition to supporting the professional development of their staff, employers of Faraday Engineers will be able to raise their profile in the local community and obtain an insight into the views of a future generation of potential engineers. If required, letters will be sent to employers detailing the benefits of participation in the programme to the company and to its employees.
Time commitment
1) A minimum of two half days per year for visiting schools. School visits will usually take place during the working day. Involvement beyond the minimum requirement would be welcomed.
2) Two half days for training:
- one half day for Science and Engineering Ambassadors training, probably to be delivered locally/regionally
- one half day for Faraday specific training. This will be delivered at Michael Faraday House, Stevenage in early September and may require a whole day off work. We are exploring the possibility of making this training available via the Faraday website for those unable to attend the Stevenage session.
Payment of expenses
Reasonable travel expenses will be paid.
