Am I ready to apply?
Guidance to help you decide whether you are ready to apply for professional registration
Professional registration is a competence based assessment and as such there is no set time scale for reaching the standard required for registration. This will depend on your own experiences and circumstances. This is a significant difference from previous sets of regulations in the UK.
To become registered, you will need to demonstrate competence, of which technical/engineering knowledge and understanding is a part.
Steps towards applying for registration
- Become a member of the IET in the appropriate category.
- Read characterisations and requirements for CEng, IEng and EngTech and decide the category of registration for which you wish to apply.
- Read through the application process carefully.
- Download the appropriate application pack, and read the requirements and guidance notes.
- If you have any outstanding queries at this stage about your competence, underpinning knowledge and understanding and/or ability to demonstrate either/both of these, consult a professional registration advisor.
- Draft your application form, observing the advice in the guidance notes and taking note of the examples, to ensure you are able to demonstrate you meet the appropriate generic competences and underpinning knowledge and understanding.
- Discuss your draft application with your referees.
- You are advised to have your application reviewed by a professional registration advisor before completing the final version.
- Complete the application form.
