SMART objectives

SMART is an acronym used to help you define and set effective objectives or goals.

Specific – be precise about what you intend to achieve – remain focused on the objective(s) to avoid wandering off in unrelated areas.

Measurable – quantifying your objectives is key and can help you to focus on what is expected. It can also aid your manager who can monitor and assess actual performance against the set objectives.

Achievable – consider carefully what you can actually achieve. Achievable objectives are based on the ideal scenario where everything is in place such as relevant skill set, adequate resources, agreed timescale, management support and access to key people.

Realistic – your objectives should always add value within the context where they are set ensuring that the correct resources are in place to make the objective happen.

Timely – decide on a timescale to complete the objectives which will inevitably add the appropriate sense of urgency to each task ensuring that the overall objectives are not prolonged over an unreasonable amount of time.

How does Career Manager work?

Career Manager is a web based database application. It consists of two main components: the database running under SQL Server 2000 and the web application developed on a Microsoft .NET platform running under Internet Information Server (IIS). Career Manager uses a simple and easy to use web interface.

Users connect to the web server using a web browser. This Internet communication is encrypted using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption, authenticated by VeriSign. The client web browser must support JavaScript and temporary cookies (and have these features enabled). The supported web browsers are Internet Explorer 5 and subsequent editions, and Mozilla Firefox

Career Manager is populated with recognised frameworks such as:  UK-SPEC, SFIA (skills framework for the information age), safety critical systems and additional sector-specific frameworks supporting the standards and professionalism within the engineering and technology sector.

Our members can build their competence profile by matching their skill set against the recognised framework competence levels, collect and store evidence, identify and resolve further training and learning required for professional registration towards CEng, IEng or EngTech and for continued professional development.

Our PD-How2 web site will further assist you with explanations regarding the professional development cycle.
