Advanced Modern Apprentices at Scottish Power Energy Networks are now offered the opportunity to join the IET as a student member - to help with their academic studies and their professional development.

Scottish Power increases its engagement with the IET

The scheme currently has 100 trainees within the Business.  When asked why SP Energy Networks decided that they would offer this opportunity George Hedley – Apprentice Co-ordinator said “Scottish Power and the IET already have a strong relationship - through our accredited graduate programme, which currently has 40 trainees on the programme, and as a Power Academy scholarships partner. By offering IET membership to our apprentices, Scottish Power is demonstrating its support for its entire engineering community with professional development, whether an apprentice, technician, graduate or engineer.

Furthermore, the apprentices will benefit from the wide range of knowledge services the IET offers for academic excellence and ongoing professional development. In addition to this, the trainees get exposure to the wider world of engineering and technology to help them understand how what they do directly affects the quality of people’s lives. At the end of the day we need to invest in our apprentices to meet the engineering challenges of tomorrow.”

Another aspect of IET membership which interested Scottish Power was that upon completion of the Modern Apprentice programme, the trainees are given the opportunity to apply for Engineering Technician (EngTech) qualification. Due to the high quality of the training offered by Scottish Power, the IET has approved the scheme so candidates can apply for fast track registration. Some technicians will then move to engineering based roles in which a road map to IEng and CEng qualifications has already been identified.

Both the apprentice and graduate schemes, which are accredited by the IET, have received commendation for their success and have been modelled by other companies due to their excellence.  They combine formal courses, on the job experience and on going assessment against an agreed set of competencies. The schemes also involve the trainees successfully completing a number of placements in different areas of the business ensuring a wide range of opportunities as they progress through their training.

Apprentice and student membership costs only £30 for 4 years membership.
