RE routes to CEng, IEng and EngTech.

Membership

You will need to become a member of the IET before applying for professional registration. For more information please visit the Armed Forces IET Membership page.

Apply for professional registration

The IET has mapped out certain job roles and career pathways to the requirements for professional registration, resulting in a Special Registration Agreement (SRA).

Please note your application will need to be sent to the Scheme Coordinator for endorsement prior to submitting to the IET, details can be found at the bottom of the page.

Eligibility criteria


These routes have been defined by a series of benchmarks which form the eligibility criteria for each category of registration as follows:

CEng

Criteria:

  • Current serving member of RE

Direct Entry Officer - Have an appropriate engineering first degree (BEng/MEng), or, exceptionally and with the agreement of each of the Royal Engineers and the IET an alternative degree.

And

Have completed the Professional Engineering Training course and the MSc in Military Construction Engineering.

Garrison Engineer – Have demonstrated CEng competence, including underpinning knowledge, through sufficient time in a Technical Engineering Appointment as a Garrison Engineer.

Or

Clear demonstration to the satisfaction of the IET achievement of the same level of competence, knowledge and understanding as the above. Examples of training and experience leading to the same level of personal technical contribution are required.

IEng

Criteria:

  • Current serving member of RE;

  • Garrison Engineer 

Have demonstrated IEng competence e.g. through the Clerk of Works course and sufficient time in Technical Engineering Appointment as a Garrison Engineer.

And meets the UK&U Requirements:

Have appropriate academics qualifications for IEng (as per EngC UK-SPEC)

Or

Clear demonstration to the satisfaction of the IET achievement of the same level of competence, knowledge and understanding as the above. Examples of training and experience leading to the same level of personal technical contribution are required.

  • Clerk of Works 

Have demonstrated IEng competence, including underpinning knowledge, through completion of the Clerk of Works course and completion of a linked Bachelor's Top-Up Degree and sufficient time in a Technical Engineering Appointment as a Clerk of Works

And meets the UK&U requirements through:

Appropriate academic qualifications of IEng (as per EngC UK-SPEC)

 Or 

Clear demonstration to the satisfaction of the IET achievement of the same level of competence, knowledge and understanding as the above. Examples of training and experience leading to the same level of personal technical contribution are required.

 

EngTech


Criteria: 
  • Current serving member of RE 

Completion of a programme leading to NVQ L3 (electrical or mechanical disciplines); or a suitable qualification at QCF3 (or SCQF or EQF equivalent) or above;

Or

Clear demonstration to the satisfaction of the IET achievement of the same level of knowledge and understanding as the above. Examples of training and experience leading to the same level of personal technical contribution are required.

PRI is not mandatory for EngTech but may be requested in exceptional cases).

Prior to submitting your application, please contact the Scheme Coordinator to confirm eligibility; once confirmed they will complete an endorsement form which should be submitted to the IET with your application.
