Refrigeration and air conditioning

This apprenticeship covers a wide range of skills and occupations within the air conditioning and refrigeration industry.

Apprentice engineer This is a broad industry with many occupations available to apprentices.

Refrigeration engineer

On the refrigeration pathway you would learn to complete the installation, assembly, fitting, testing and decommissioning of refrigeration systems. As a refrigeration engineer you could find yourself working in many different places, from rooftops to supermarkets and construction sites.

Air conditioning engineer

The air conditioning pathway on the other hand covers installation, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and heat pump systems. Your job as an air conditioning engineer could see you working at swimming pools, hotels and offices.

Work in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector

Your work might include surveying potential installation sites; planning the layout of pipework, ducts and control panels; and fitting components. Or you could train as a service and maintenance engineers, fixing any problems.

The refrigeration and air conditioning industry takes its responsibility to the environment seriously so you’ll learn to work with this in mind, and health and safety is also of key importance.

Advanced level apprenticeship

On the advanced level apprenticeship, your skills base will broaden to include working with industrial systems in the refrigeration and air conditioning industries.

Salary

The starting salary - once qualified - is between £17,000 and £21,000.
