As a higher apprentice in engineering environmental technologies, you will learn how engineering and environmental awareness can combine across different sectors for the benefit of all.
Industrial activity in the past half century has created serious ecological problems, such as global warming, loss of biodiversity, air pollution, acid rain and toxic waste. The engineering manufacturing, building services engineering, and construction sectors need a skilled workforce of technicians and engineers to help improve environmental performance, increase productivity and remain competitive.
As an apprentice in engineering environmental technologies, you will learn how engineering and environmental awareness can combine across different sectors for the benefit of all. For example, manufacturing engineers use environmentally friendly processes to produce sustainable materials for the construction and maintenance of new energy efficient homes and buildings.
Through a combination of practical skills combined with a higher education qualification, you will learn how to respond to environmental issues and how new technologies can be used to implement sustainable practices.
There are three pathways on the Higher Apprenticeship in engineering environmental technologies:
Depending on the pathway you choose, you could find yourself managing the quality, cost and sustainability of construction projects, or identifying potentially hazardous engineering and manufacturing environmental risks and working to reduce the environmental impact of site operations. You might work alongside planning engineers to ensure that new manufacturing equipment is selected, installed and commissioned in line with environmental standards and requirements to minimise power consumption, air and water pollution, and environmental hazards.
Some of the main roles in this sector include retrofit technical site supervisor, facilities controls engineer, environmental manufacturing planning engineer and technical business development manager.
The starting salary - once qualified - is £33,000.
