What is Career Advantage?

What is Graduate Advantage?

Graduate Advantage is a membership package to help students during the transition from university to employment and for upgrading their membership from Student to Member MIET.

The main benefits of Graduate Advantage are that it helps students, preparing for the days after graduation to continue to gain access to all the resources of the IET. In addition it offers assistance and guidance on settling into your first professional role, applying for jobs and moving up to full MIET status (subject to meeting the member criteria) allowing you to use the MIET letters after your name - all at a significantly reduced rate at a time when we know you are most likely to be struggling for money.

How much does Graduate Advantage cost?

There is a special arrangement for Student Members within their final year of studying, who can sign to the Graduate Advantage package for only £20 providing they make the payment in advance prior to course end.  After the course end, new and existing members who haven't made the advance payment can only sign up to Graduate Advantage at the reduced membership rate of £60 for the 12 months after completing their course.

Am I able to have a rate reduction on the Graduate Advantage fee in special circumstances such as being unemployed?

Graduate Advantage already offers membership at a greatly reduced rate, less than the current Low Income subscription rate and therefore no further discounts can be applied to this rate.

What do I get for signing up to Graduate Advantage?

On initial sign up a new member will receive the Graduate Advantage welcome pack which contains: Letter welcoming you to the IET and presentation folder containing your Graduate Advantage and IET Advantage brochures giving more detail about the programme with checklists on how best to use your membership. If you have registered an email address with us, you'll also receive our Graduate Advantage tailored email communications, which provide in depth advice about finishing your studies, finding employment and settling into your first professional role. An existing member will also receive a certifying letter confirming their student membership of the IET.

When you have finished your degree and upgraded your membership to MIET (subject to assessment) you will receive a transfer pack containing an MIET certificate, employer awareness pack, details of the Young Professional Buddy scheme and the next steps.

Who is eligible for Graduate Advantage?

Students on engineering or technology degrees within their final year of study and graduates within 1 year of graduation can also sign up.

I'm a new member, how do I sign up to Graduate Advantage?

For final year students go to the Join IET Advantage web page and download both the Student Application form and Payment form.  Be sure to tick the Graduate Advantage box on the form and then post it, with your completed Member Payment form, to Membership Processing Team, The IET, Michael Faraday House, Stevenage, Herts, SG1 2AY, UK.

For graduates in their 1st year after Course End Date, go to the Join IET Advantage web page and use the 'Join the IET' button to link to the online option for application. There is a Membership Wizard available to help you choose the correct membership level.

I am an existing Student Member; can I sign up to Graduate Advantage?

Student members will now be automatically offered Graduate Advantage at their 1st renewal after Course End Date – the fee will be a reduced rate of £60 for the Graduate Advantage year.

To benefit from an extra reduced rate of £20 (instead of the £60 renewal) for one year in Graduate Advantage, you will need to make an advance payment whilst still in your final year of university before your course end date.

To do this, go to the Join IET Advantage web page and download both the Student Application form and Payment form. Be sure to tick the Graduate Advantage box, then post it, with your completed Member Payment form, to Membership Processing Team, The IET, Michael Faraday House, Stevenage, Herts, SG1 2AY, UK.

I am not a member of the IET; can I sign up to Graduate Advantage?

Yes, as long as you are within the first year of graduation. See ‘I’m a new member; how do I sign up for Graduate Advantage’ above.

Does it matter if I am a mature student?

Members can still sign up to any part of the IET Advantage programme if they are mature students.  The only restriction is that they must either be in their final year of study or studying within the first six years from graduating.

Can I still join Graduate Advantage even if I live or study outside of  the UK?

Graduate Advantage is available to students and graduates of engineering and technology related degrees across the world.  For applicants from India, there is a tailored version of Graduate Advantage - details are available on the India website. For applicants from China (not including Hong Kong), payment needs to be paid through PayPal or with a credit card; with payment being made in US Dollars. Applications from all other parts of the world are processed through the UK.

I’m not yet in my final year of studying, can I sign up to Graduate Advantage?

No, but you can join the IET as a student member to take advantage of the products and services the IET has to offer, and then when you reach your final year you can sign up to Graduate Advantage. To sign up for student membership please go to the Join IET Advantage web page and join online or download the Student application form.

I am going to continue my studies after I finish my current course, should I sign up to Graduate Advantage?

If you are going to continue your studies by doing a post graduate course you need to decide whether Graduate Advantage is right for you. If you are going to be studying full-time you may decide to stay or join as a student member and then sign up to Graduate Advantage later, once you are in your final year of your post graduate course. If you are going to be a part-time post graduate student then you will not be eligible to continue as a student member and should sign up to Graduate Advantage.

I am continuing my studies full-time, what are my options?

If you have decided to continue your studies, and will be studying full-time you have 2 options.

  1. You can become a student member of the IET and pay the student membership rate which is currently £20 per year or £50 for duration of course. You will not receive the benefits of the Graduate Advantage Package and you will not be entitled to use any designatory letters after your name.
  2. You can join Graduate Advantage and apply for MIET (subject to assessment). You will receive all the benefits of the Graduate Advantage package for only £60 a year during the qualifying period after your graduation date. You may also be eligible for MIET which would mean you could use the letters MIET after your name. The requirements for MIET can be found at the Requirements for TMIET and MIET page.

What is Career Advantage?
