What is Career Advantage?

Career Advantage is the IET's membership package for early career engineers between 1 and 4 years from graduation,  offering a discounted membership fee of only £60 per year up to a maximum of 3 years instead of our standard rate of £137 (for 2014). Career Advantage is the second step of our IET Advantage programme and follows on from our IET Graduate Advantage package. For more information on Graduate Advantage please visit About IET Advantage.

The key benefit of Career Advantage is that it is designed, as the name would suggest, to help you on your way in your career.  If you are working towards professional registration (CEng or IEng) we will provide you with a plan of suggested goals to guide you towards registration. Throughout the Career Advantage membership period the IET will be supporting your career and keeping you up-to-date with events, knowledge and communities,  which will be important to keep you up-to-date in your engineering career.

I didn’t sign up to Graduate Advantage, am I still entitled to Career Advantage?

Yes, being on Graduate Advantage is not a prerequisite for joining Career Advantage. As long as you meet the eligibility criteria for Career Advantage you will be able to take advantage of this package.

Who is eligible for Career Advantage?

Career Advantage is for people who graduated between 1 and 4 years. The number of years Career Advantage discount you receive depends on when you sign up. If you sign up in your second year after graduation you will receive 3 years at £60. If you join in your third year after graduation you will receive 2 years at £60 and if you sign up in your fourth year after graduation you will receive 1 year at £60.

How do I sign up to Career Advantage?

Go to the Join IET Advantage page and download the Member application and payment form and then post it, with payment, to the Member Assessment Team, The IET, Michael Faraday House, Stevenage, Herts, SG1 2AY, UK.

I’m not currently a member of the IET, can I join and sign up to Career Advantage?

Yes, as long as you graduated between 1 and 4 years ago you can join as a new member and sign straight onto Career Advantage. To join the IET and sign up to Career Advantage, please complete and return the Member application and payment form which can be downloaded from the Join IET Advantage page.

Am I able to have a rate reduction on the Career Advantage fee?

Career Advantage already offers membership at a greatly reduced rate and therefore, there are no further discounts on this rate.

I’m an existing member, do I need to sign up to Career Advantage or will it be done automatically?

From 2014, we will automatically be offering you renewal into Career Advantage where you records show that you graduated between 1 and 4 years ago.

I have already paid my renewal at the full rate, can I claim the Career Advantage discount and get a refund?

It depends on your renewal date. The Career Advantage scheme came into effect in 2012. If you have paid your renewal at the full standard membership rate within the last 3 months you may be eligible for a refund. Please call Membership Services on +44 (0) 1438 765678 to learn more.

Do I have to be MIET to sign up to Career Advantage?

No, Career Advantage is open to Associates and MIET's, however the package and communications are more suitable to those at MIET level and we would be expecting you to seriously be considering transfer to this Membership category, so if you have not already done so, you should apply for a transfer of membership (subject to assessment). To transfer your membership, please go to the Transfer or upgrade your membership page.

I am continuing my studies full-time, what are my options?

If you have decided to continue your studies, and will be studying full-time you have 2 options.

  1. You can become a student member of the IET and pay the student membership rate which is currently £20 per year or £50 for duration of course. You will not receive the benefits of the Career Advantage Package and you will not be entitled to use any designatory letters after your name.
  2. You can join Career Advantage and apply for MIET (subject to assessment). You will receive all the benefits of the Career Advantage package for only £60 a year during the qualifying period after your graduation date. You may also be eligible for MIET which would mean you could use the letters MIET after your name. The requirements for MIET can be found at the Requirements for TMIET and MIET page.

I am a part-time post graduate student, can I sign up to Career Advantage or should I join as a student member?

As a part-time post graduate student you are not eligible for student membership, however as long as you graduated within the last three years you will be eligible for Career Advantage.  If you graduated in the past 12 months you are eligible for Graduate Advantage.

I finished studying four years ago, what is the benefit of signing up to Career Advantage now?

If you sign up to Career Advantage within your 4th year after graduation you will be entitled to one final year of membership at £60, plus you will receive all the other benefits of Career Advantage. If you are MIET, you will also automatically be signed up to Professional Advantage at the end of the final Career Advantage year.

If I have been a mature student can I join Career Advantage?

Members can still sign up to any part of the Advantage programme if they are mature students, the only restriction is that they must either be in their final year of studying or within the first six years from graduating.  For Career Advantage, members must join within the period 1 to 4 years from graduation.

Can I still join Career Advantage if I live or study outside of the UK?

Career Advantage is available to students and graduates of engineering or technology related degrees across the world.  The only country at the moment from which it is not possible to join is China (not including Hong Kong).  For applicants from India, India has its own version of Career Advantage and details on this are available through the IET India website (www.theiet.in/advantage/careers).  Applications from all other parts of the world are processed through the UK.

What is Professional Advantage?

Professional Advantage is the third and final next step in the IET Advantage programme and is now available to new and existing members with a reduction on the standard membership rate of £137 (for 2014) to just £90 per year for 2 years. Only Members with MIET are eligible to transition to Professional Advantage. Members on Career Advantage will automatically be offered renewal into Professional Advantage once they get to the start of their 5th year from graduation, but all members who do join the Advantage programme at this point will benefit from the goal driven support towards Professional Registration and guidance in becoming a professional engineer.

When will I be able to sign up for Professional Advantage?

Professional Advantage is now available to new and existing members who are in the 5th and 6th years from graduation (subject to them being or becoming a Member with MIET).
