Professional registration is an independent assessment of knowledge, understanding, commitment and competence
The IET is an awarding body for five professional titles: Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Chartered IT Professional (CITP), Engineering Technician (EngTech) and ICT Technician (ICTTech). These globally recognised professional qualifications indicate a high level of competence and commitment to remaining at the forefront of developments within the profession; something that is equally valued by employers and clients.
An industry placement year is one of the most effective ways for your students to hone their skills, apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and gain real experience of what is required in the world of work. It is clear that in an increasingly competitive environment for universities, the quality of your placements will help you to attract the brightest and most motivated students to your institution.
Technician professional registration builds on the effectiveness and appeal of industry placements by enabling students to gain professional registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) and/or ICT Technician (ICTTech) following completion of their year in industry.

Professional registration establishes that your workforce has the right knowledge and the right experience. It is intended to ensure high standards, demonstrate transferable skills, up-to-date professional competence and continued professional development. Your highly specialist and professional technical support team is critical to the provision of quality services for the university; they should therefore be given the opportunity to be recognised and valued for the work they do.
They will become role models for new staff joining the university and an ambassador contributing to improving the student professional development experience. Our professional registration advisors will help your staff determine the right professional title according to their speciality and assist them through the registration process; mentors outside the workplace will help identify professional development opportunities. The IET is working with HEaTED to provide support to your technical staff with their professional development and progress towards professional registration.
Growing your own talent through the provision of apprenticeships is an effective route to providing your skilled workforce of professional technicians; upon graduation your apprentices should be given the opportunity to be recognised and valued for their ability to perform vital roles for the university. The IET has a dedicated membership programme for apprentices and technicians – IET Signature. It offers targeted support to move them towards professional success and delivers the information, tools and support apprentices and technicians
have identified they need to succeed, all within a highly relevant sector specific framework.
The IET is dedicated to supporting the professional development of engineering and technology apprentices and technical staff in Higher Education.
