Power networks - postgrad scholarships
Find out about the PNRA research studentship available at Manchester University. The project looks into LV cable monitoring using domestic smart meters.
One of the major problems for Distribution Network Operators arises from the unknown reliability of low voltage distribution cables. Previous work in the University of Manchester for UK Power Networks has shown that incipient defects can present discharges with hysteresis in discharge sub-cycle conductance characteristics. That work concluded that hysteresis might be used to track discharge development and forecast cable failure events.
The opportunity is now to build on the knowledge of all this work, with an accent on interpretation and application in networks with distributed, low processing power. This project aims to answer the question ‘can the huge deployment of Smart Meters at customer premises be actively used to predict failure of low voltage cables networks?’
This studentship is only open to UK citizens who have received, or who are due to receive, an upper second or first class degree in an Electrical Engineering.
This studentship is sponsored collaboratively by companies from the UK electricity supply industry sector.
