J R Beard Travelling Fund

What is it?

In his will, the late J R Beard, President of the IET 1940-41, left a legacy to provide grants, from time to time, to help members to travel overseas to further the objectives of the Institution.

The J R Beard Travelling Fund awards recognise Mr Beard's interest in the education of young people, and are intended to assist members of the Institution, to undertake overseas travel to broaden their professional experience; perhaps via a study tour, through working in industry or through participation in an international conference or seminar.  The awards may also assist with travel associated with the presentation of papers at prestigious international conferences, or objectives which relate to manufacturing techniques.

Ten J R Beard Travelling Fund awards are available per annum.  Each award has a value of up to £500.

Preference is given to younger members who at the early stage of their professional careers and who are unable to readily find assistance from conventional sources. In assessing applications, the IET will take into account such factors as;

    • the soundness and worthiness of the applicant's ideas in relation to the purpose for which the money would be used, if awarded,
    • the applicant's research promise and evidence of ability,
    • whether or not there is a genuine need for the award (in so far as assistance is not available from conventional sources of finance).
