IET Lifetime Achievement Award

Regulations

  • The IET Laureate will be someone whose lifetime contribution to developments in engineering or technology has been, in the opinion of the Institution’s panel of judges, of greatest significance.
  • The contributions on which they will be assessed must have demonstrated benefit to humankind.
  • Nominations may be received from any individual or organisation.
  • The IET Laureate will be invited to select up to five outstanding young engineering professionals each to receive a gift of £10,000 to enable them to pursue engineering-related activities, which would not otherwise be accomplished, and whose outcome has the potential to benefit of mankind.
  • It is expected that an IET Laureate will make her/his selection in light of the spirit of this award; that is to facilitate interdisciplinary and international collaboration, and enable young people in the early stages of their careers to bring their ideas to fruition.
  • The five outstanding young engineering professionals will be expected to report to the Institution on the success of their endeavours explaining how the money has been used.  The Institution would wish to publish their work both in the immediate future and in longer term once the benefits are realised.  The Institution would appreciate acknowledgement of its assistance in any commercial exploitation of the work.
  • The money will be paid in a single payment directly to each of the five identified recipients.  The money will be forwarded on the understanding that it will be used to carry out engineering related activities that would not otherwise be accomplished.
  • An IET Laureate must declare the names of the five people to whom the money is to be given within six months of the date on which they have been notified that they have won the award. If an IET Laureate is unable to select five outstanding young engineering professionals within the six month period, their right to select the five people will be forfeited, and the award money will be retained by the Institution.
  • Judgment will be made on the basis of the citation submitted by the nominator(s).
  • In exceptional circumstances the Institution reserves the right to refuse payment to a person selected by an IET Laureate if it has reason to believe that the money will not be used in furtherance of the Institution’s objects and purposes.
  • Decisions reached will be regarded as final and no further correspondence relating to the allocation of the award can be entered into after the decisions have been announced.
  • The Institution reserves the right to decide on the frequency with which the award is offered. This will be not more than once in a calendar year and there will be a single winner.
  • The Institution will convene an international panel of distinguished engineers to select the award recipient.  The panel will be chaired by The President of the Institution.  For the first year, the Institution will ask Engineering Academies and Engineering Professional Bodies to suggest people who may be suitable for the judging panel.
  • On each occasion that the award is given the Institution will select a judging panel such that there are people on the panel who have knowledge of the fields of engineering in which the short-listed candidates for the award have worked.
