It's now a year since we closed Savoy Place, and the project is now firmly into the construction phase.
As of May 2014, demolition work on those areas of the building where substantial change is planned (e.g. removal of the old Council Chamber to make way for the new Faraday Centre) had largely been completed. A crane has been erected on site and work has now commenced on removal of the old Lecture Theatre roof. Work on pile driving for the foundations for the new structural steelwork has been completed, albeit two weeks later than planned. All known asbestos in the building has, we believe, been identified and removed or protected.
Workshops are now being held to review the finishes that will be used for the various sections of the building. The Board of Trustees has also authorised the incorporation of some ‘story of engineering’ exhibits throughout the building, which were outlined in the March video update on the project.
Approval has been given by the Westminster Council planning authority for the windows on the second floor of the building (within the new Faraday Centre) to be lowered, to improve the views. This change is currently being incorporated into the plans.
