How to use the Library online catalogue

Information on using the Library online catalogue to request, renew, and reserve books once members are logged into the website. Non-members may also search the catalogue and request books by telephone and Email.

The Library online catalogue can be searched by anyone, but certain features and services are only available to members who have registered and logged in to the website.

Searching for journal titles:

Provides users with details on the issues we currently hold in our stock. Full text articles are not available on the catalogue. To obtain a complete article, please see our Document Supply page.

Some journal titles will have a link to that journals external website, providing remote access to back issues.

Searching for book titles:

Provides users with the book title, authors, publisher, ISBN, year etc for each book/conference/report/standard held in our stock. Record will give the current status for the selected book, e.g On Loan, On Shelf, Reference, Missing item.

Some book titles will have a link to the e-book version , which provides access to the contents of this book remotely. This is useful when the library copy of the book is missing from our stock or on loan to another user.

Self-service:

The catalogue shows status information, so users can see immediately whether a title is already on loan, and allows many self-service functions to be performed. These self-service functions require members to be logged in to the website first.

Loan requests:

Required titles with status On Shelf, can be requested for loan by clicking on the "Request" button.

Reserving items:

Required titled with status On Loan can be reserved by clicking on the "Reserve" button.

My Stuff:

Clicking on "My Stuff" allows users to review their "Current loans", "Loan history", "My overdues", "Current reserves", and also to "renew" their books on loan".

If a user is unable to renew their current loans then this may be because the book(s) has been reserved by another user and needs to be returned to the Library asap. It could also be the case that the book(s) has been renewed already for the maximum amount of 5 times. In this instance the book(s) will have to be returned to the Library. Please place a note with the returned book(s) if you would like them on loan to you again.

Other engineering institution members:

Members of other engineering institutions can still borrow books, but they are asked to contact the Library.
